I love picking a word of the year. It’s so much easier to focus on a word and a specific feeling than a million goals….
This year, my word is “present.”
I’d really like to avoid feelings of regret and guilt (living in the past) or feelings of worry, anxiety and fear (living in the future) this year. I’ve really come to recognize I am robbing myself of the life I AM living by marinating in these feelings. I am robbing myself of the enjoyment of today.
So wonderful people, here is how I will live my life in the PRESENT:
–I will remove unneeded possessions from my home. Many of my possessions are tied to a memory or an event. And while this has been the reason I’ve kept them around, it is also keeping me in the past. Does this mean I’ll be getting rid of ALL THE THINGS? Heck no. Just the things I truly do not need.
–I will stop reliving my past accomplishments. If I’m constantly dwelling on the amazing things I’ve accomplished….how will I ever accomplish anything new?
–I will write down at least 5 things a day I am grateful for. By doing this, I will be training my mind to seek out the positive things taking place in my daily life.
–I will seek the beauty in my everyday life. Really be intentional about looking at the trees and listening to the birds while I go on walks, watch my children play and laugh, enjoy the food I eat by actually tasting it, not just chewing and swallowing.
–I will stop worrying about the future. I love a good quote…SO…here are a few of my favorite quotes about worry, feel free to download and share!
As an avid reader, I’ll also be searching for books that will help remind me of my word.

So, here’s to a year of living in the present.
Eckhart Tolle summed it up nicely for me:
“Unease, anxiety, tension, stress, worry – all forms of fear – are caused by too much future, and not enough presence. Guilt, regret, resentment, grievances, sadness, bitterness, and all forms of non-forgiveness are cause by too much past, and not enough presence.”
Letting go of the unease, anxiety, tension, stress, worry, guilt, regret, resentment, grievances, sadness and bitterness and being mindful of the right now. Sounds like a great plan for 2019.
